New Commission on The Skills Of The American Workforce Endorses ‘The Opportunity Equation’—
Sees Intersection Of Interests Mobilizing For Education Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C.—"The Opportunity Equation is a timely, thoughtful and important contribution to the current debate on the state of schooling in mathematics and science, as one would expect from the two distinguished organizations that sponsored the commission that produced it," said Marc Tucker, President of the National Center on Education and the Economy (NCEE). The Opportunity Equation is the work of the Carnegie Corporation of New York-Institute for Advanced Study Commission on Mathematics and Science Education; it challenges America to "do school differently" and details what innovations are needed, and who must implement them.

NCEE is the sponsor of the New Commission on the Skills of the Skills Commission, which issued a call for sweeping changes in the design of the American education system in its 2006 report, Tough Choices or Tough Times. Tucker sees a convergence between NCEE’s proposals and this new call for higher quality assessment and a change in the design of the nation’s education systems.
