  Thomas Payzant
Former Superintendent, Boston Public Schools

Thomas Payzant served as Superintendent of Boston Public Schools from 1995 until 2006. Prior to his Boston superintendency, Dr. Payzant was appointed by President Clinton to serve as Assistant Secretary for Elementary and Secondary Education. Dr. Payzant’s teaching career began at Belmont High School, Belmont, Massachusetts, in 1963. He then went to Tacoma, Washington, to teach at Gray Junior High School. His first superintendency was with the School District of Springfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, from 1969-1973. Subsequently he was Superintendent of the Eugene, Oregon, Public Schools from 1973 to 1978; the Oklahoma City Public Schools from 1979 to 1982; and the San Diego Unified School District from 1982 to 1993. In 1992, Dr. Payzant was awarded the Harold W. McGraw, Jr. Prize in Education and in 2004 was awarded the Richard R. Green Award in Urban Excellence from the Council of the Great City Schools.
